As one of 18 children, Ray J. Wherley left school with a 7th grade education. After working to help the family, Ray was drafted into the Army during World War II and later enlisted in the United States Air Force for four more years. Upon return to the area, he drove truck, worked as a welder, and even owned a used furniture business.

Ray established Wherley Trailer Manufacturing in 1959 in Hanover, PA, moving it to New Oxford in the early 1960’s. The business today is known as Wherley Trailer, Inc.

Ray died on March 30, 2015, and to honor his memory, this scholarship was established to help New Oxford High School graduating seniors interested in studying welding, mechanics, or any tech/trade program to continue their education.  Ray was married to Mary Ellen (Davis) Wherley for 62 years.
