Community Foundation Awards $17,500 In Grants for Littlestown

The Adams County Community Foundation has announced its second annual grants from The Fund for Littlestown, made possible by the Bernard, Mary and Richard Selby Family Memorial Fund. The late Dick Selby created the memorial fund as a permanent endowment to honor his parents, Mary and Bernard, and the family’s commitment to their hometown of Littlestown. The Fund will provide charitable support for unmet community needs in Littlestown for generations to come.

Gettysburg attorney David K. James III, who worked with Dick Selby to create his charitable fund at the Community Foundation, said, “Dick established the Fund to support Littlestown forever. These grants would have made him very happy; these are exactly the kinds of needs he would have wanted to support if he were still with us today.”

Dick Selby was a member of many local service organizations, including the Littlestown Rotary. So it is fitting that current Littlestown Rotarians Leslie Breighner and Patricia Green Rodgers helped review applications to The Fund for Littlestown.

The 2020 grants for Littlestown include:

Adams County Office for Aging – Littlestown Senior Center – $2,500

This grant will help pay for new furnishings to make the Center more welcoming and comfortable for Littlestown seniors.

Alpha Fire Company No. 1 – $1,000

This grant will purchase new helmets meeting current safety standards for the members of the community’s volunteer fire department.

Borough of Littlestown – $2,000.00

Littlestown Park is a community treasure with playing fields, picnic grounds and a pool.  This grant will pay for new trees to replace those lost to blight, keeping this beautiful green space green.

Littlestown Baseball/Softball for Youth, Inc. – $4,000

Littlestown Baseball aims to keep the cost of participation low so that more kids can join a team and play ball. This grant will upgrade players’ equipment, purchase a picnic table and support repairs to the dugout, fencing and field.

Littlestown YMCA – $4,000

This grant will provide scholarships, ensuring that young people whose families cannot otherwise afford to enroll them will be able to participate in summer activities.

New Hope Ministries – $4,000

New Hope has recently established a permanent presence in Littlestown, with a food bank and caseworkers who connect clients with additional resources. This grant will enable them to offer emergency assistance for critical needs such as food, rent, utilities and transportation.
